We’re going to share with you a brilliantly simple, full-flavoured easy vegan French toast recipe. It will use ingredients you can grab off the shelf, just as if you were shopping for milk and eggs. Except we will be using their plant-based equivalents, with some vegan cream, cinnamon and vanilla extract. Plus some tasty toppings of course, which you can freestyle and make to your tastes. We’re big fans of golden syrup, with fresh strawberries and a dusting of icing sugar.
We love a stack of pancakes at the weekend, and if you do too you should check out our recipe for vegan crepes. Our French toast recipe is just as easy but offers a different flavour sensation. The combination of vanilla and cinnamon is a familiar breakfast duo, between baked goods and cereals alike. But when soaked up in some gooey fried bread with fresh fruit and some sticky syrup, there’s little that tops it for us.
French toast is an American breakfast favourite, with an unexpected origin story. “The French did not invent French toast. In fact, French toast was invented long before France even existed. The first known recorded recipe comes from Rome. For centuries, the French themselves called this dish ‘Roman Bread’” WTAMU.
French toast got its current name through by mistake. “Albany, New York, innkeeper Joseph French introduced the dish to America in 1724. He intended to name his creation “French’s Toast” but inadvertently left out the apostrophe and S” KulicksFrenchToastRecipes.
You’ll find our recipe card in the detailed guide below. You will notice that it’s only a short list of steps you need to work through to make your French Toast. Just add all of the ingredients to a bowl, give everything a quick whisk, soak some bread and finally, just fry it.
There’s no food prep, just mixing a few measures of ingredients. Then you’re simply moving a slice of bread from a bowl to a pan. Add some toppings and enjoy. We were so pleased with this recipe the first time we made it and it’s now a regular weekend treat for us. A delicious way to start the day.

Recipe FAQs
How do I avoid soggy French Toast?
Use slightly stale or day-old bread as fresh bread absorbs more liquid and can turn soggy quickly. Staler bread holds its structure better and provides a better texture.
Choose a tick sliced bread as thicker slices hold up better to the soaking process and help maintain a crisp exterior.
Dip the bread into the egg-style mixture briefly, making sure both sides are coated, but do not leave it soaking for too long, and avoid making the mixture too watery.
Preheat your non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Cooking the French toast over too high heat can lead to the exterior browning too quickly while the interior remains soggy. Be patient and avoid flipping too often.
If you’re making multiple batches, place the cooked French toast on a wire rack instead of stacking them. Stacking can trap steam and lead to sogginess.
Is it better to cook French toast on low or high heat?
When the heat is too high, the outside of the French toast can brown quickly, but the inside might remain undercooked. This can result in a soggy interior, as the egg mixture doesn’t get enough time to cook and set properly.
High heat can cause uneven browning. The exterior may become too dark or even burnt before the interior is thoroughly cooked.
Cooking on high heat can give French toast a rubbery or tough texture, which is far from the desired soft and fluffy texture.
To achieve the best results, it’s better to cook French toast over medium heat. This allows the egg mixture to cook through evenly and gives the bread enough time to absorb the flavors while maintaining a crispy exterior.
